Okay- It's like this- you have a scale & you just doodle within it. 
You make up the patterns. 
The chord tones (actual notes in the chord) will be surrounded by these 
& that's where you land on the 1 count.

Up a string for "A" etc... Closed... Ex) G 

E-<3>-5-------------------------------------- 
A---------<2>-3-<5>------------------------- 
D----------------------2-4-<5>---------------- 
G--------------------------------2-<4>-5-<7>- 

Up a fret for G#, down a fret for F#, up a string for C, etc...
